“Our species’ treatment of the honeybee is a striking metaphor for our wider relationship with nature. In short, we started out okay, with a suitable amount of reverence, and then we progressively sought to bend the way of the bee to our wishes, convenience and ultimately, gross profit at the expense of all else. The result of this treatment has pushed the honeybee (a primary pollinator of most things we eat) to the point of collapse, and now we’re wondering what went wrong and how the heck to fix it. Sound familiar?”

For some reason, I felt like today was a “Big Cat” kind of day. Maybe because I have tons of work to do this weekend and I could use some of the power that we associate with these great felines. Or maybe because they are just so magestic and beautiful. Either way, Happy Big Cat Friday!

This leopard thinks he’s a meerkat. The big cat had been stalking a warthog and when his prey disappeared into long grass he was forced to stretch himself to his full height, just like a meerkat on watch. The bizarre spectacle was caught on camera in the Linyanti Game Reserve, Botswana.

A highly endangered wild cat, there are only 30-35 individuals left in the wild. These beautiful creatures are native to the mountains of eastern Russia and the Korean peninsula. Inbreeding, poaching, habitat destruction have reduced their populations dramatically, but there has been some success in recent conservation efforts. Save the Amur Leopard!

I personally would rather hike that “trail run,” but I have to agree that apple picking and pumpking picking are two of the best fall activities. I don’t know why they didn’t include jumping in leaves on this list; that’s the best!
